As a friend put it, this might be the most egregious song omission from a hip-hop album since Nas’s “Nasty” on Life is Good. Danny Brown might mesh better with Paul White than SKYWLKR, and that’s really saying something. Mind-bending. But it’s hard to let this omission really take away from the strength of Old, which isn’t quite XXX level but still phenomenal. It’s clear that Brown didn’t step into his latest with the same lofty ambitions as his last project (as he said himself, XXX was made with the intentions of garnering critical acclaim). This one’s less maniacal, but equally unhinged - particularly in the electronic and dubstep-infused Side B of the record, which is aimed and locked towards live shows. The first time “Dope Song” or “Dip” is played at a major music festival I think I might cry.
